PS, AND THANKS TO GAVIN NEWSOM!
Following up on the previous post, and in case my indirection was misleading: Anita and I got married in San Francisco this (or, rather, last) weekend.
My [department] chair pointed out that I should thank the officials in San Francisco for deciding to perform same-sex weddings, because if they hadn't taken that step, I would still be single! Explanation: a few weeks ago, while SF was still issuing same sex marriage licenses, one of Anita's law school friends said that she and her boyfriend were thinking of flying out to SF to get married and to join in the celebrations. Anita and I stole the idea (thanks, Meg!).
Of course, by the time we got out there, the CA Supreme Court had already stopped the ceremonies. But the main point is that in our case, if it weren't for same-sex weddings in San Francisco, Anita and I would still be living in sin.
I'm sure that we're not the only straight couple [that] was inspired by the same sex ceremonies, either.
At least in our case, gay marriage strengthened -- and made possible -- our marriage. Thanks, folks. Here's to hoping that more legal and political victories follow.
