Anita shifted into law school mode when she read my last post and noted that my reasoning was flawed. Why (asketh she) would we not have gotten married if SF hadn't started issuing same sex licenses? The main reason is that San Francisco's actions helped change Anita's views on marriage, from relatively negative toward somewhat positive (heavily qualified). I thought that what was going on in SF was exciting, but for her, the issuance of same sex licenses caused a serious change in her approach to the institution of marriage as a whole. She told me that upon hearing about what was going on in SF, she was really excited about marriage "for the first time."
Same sex marriages strengthen marriage for straight people, too.
