APSA
APSA's annual meeting starts today. Here are some of my thoughts on which panels will be interesting. Although not all of my suggestions fit into the category, I tend to check out panels that feature people I know, mostly because I've already then got a context for evaluation of the topic (and plus it's fun to see friends and colleagues at these meetings, and they generally appreciate your support).
- Readers of Election Law and should be interested in the panel on BCRA, which will feature (among others) Rick Hasen and Lucas Powe. Thursday, 2:15.
- Also at 2:15 on Thursday (tough choice) is a panel featuring Matthew Green (among others) presenting some really innovative and interesting work on congressional leadership. David Mayhew is the discussant for the panel, and if any of you have the slightest interest in the study of American politics, you should check out this panel to see Professor Mayhew in action.
- Two panels at 4:15 on Friday are worth noting. Fans of Adam Smith should check out the panel chaired by my grad school colleague Patricia Nordeen and featuring my good friend (and recent father) Ryan Hanley, Beyond the Invisible Hand: Adam Smith's Politics.
- And Legal Theory Blog author Lawrence Solum will be on a star-packed panel on judicial character and the selection process, Friday at 4:15.
- For the early risers on Saturday, check out: Roundtable on the Science of Politics, (8:00 am), chaired by Ira Katznelson and featuring (among others) John Gunnell and Rogers Smith.
- If you can't make the early panel on Saturday but are up by 10:00, check out the panel on the Constitution and War featuring Judith Baer, among others.
- Another interesting panel will be The Politics of Immigrant Incorporation featuring Alethia Jones on Haitian workers. I've had a chance to chat with Alethia about her work a few times and it's pretty fascinating, especially if you're interested in immigrant politics and the intersection of community activism, economic policies and urban politics. That panel is Saturday at 4:15.
If you're around on Friday during the day and happen to see me in the hall, stop me for a chat! (Friday's it for me this year.)
