Following up on my first post on this subject, below, Chris sends along a wedding present:

Um, gee, thanks, Chris!

MORE

Anita shifted into law school mode when she read my last post and noted that my reasoning was flawed. Why (asketh she) would we not have gotten married if SF hadn't started issuing same sex licenses? The main reason is that San Francisco's actions helped change Anita's views on marriage, from relatively negative toward somewhat positive (heavily qualified). I thought that what was going on in SF was exciting, but for her, the issuance of same sex licenses caused a serious change in her approach to the institution of marriage as a whole. She told me that upon hearing about what was going on in SF, she was really excited about marriage "for the first time."

Same sex marriages strengthen marriage for straight people, too.

PS, AND THANKS TO GAVIN NEWSOM!

Following up on the previous post, and in case my indirection was misleading: Anita and I got married in San Francisco this (or, rather, last) weekend.

My [department] chair pointed out that I should thank the officials in San Francisco for deciding to perform same-sex weddings, because if they hadn't taken that step, I would still be single! Explanation: a few weeks ago, while SF was still issuing same sex marriage licenses, one of Anita's law school friends said that she and her boyfriend were thinking of flying out to SF to get married and to join in the celebrations. Anita and I stole the idea (thanks, Meg!).

Of course, by the time we got out there, the CA Supreme Court had already stopped the ceremonies. But the main point is that in our case, if it weren't for same-sex weddings in San Francisco, Anita and I would still be living in sin.

I'm sure that we're not the only straight couple [that] was inspired by the same sex ceremonies, either.

At least in our case, gay marriage strengthened -- and made possible -- our marriage. Thanks, folks. Here's to hoping that more legal and political victories follow.

PS: edited once more for grammar / spelling errors. Argh.

"YOUR FUTURE TOGETHER"*

So, when you get married in California (in, say, city hall in San Francisco), the Genetic Disease Branch of the CA DHS gives you a booklet on how to stay healthy. It's mostly geared toward health during pregnancy, but I still feel touched. Right now I'm making sure that I'm getting enough folic acid (see p. 2).

More later (with pictures!).
